Only 7 Elite Gold Medals awarded in the Sauvignon Blanc category.
The Air New Zealand Wine Awards are the premier wine competition in New Zealand recognising excellence in winemaking. The competition is owned and run by New Zealand Wine Growers, making this award ceremony the most important on the New Zealand wine competition calendar.
This year saw the introduction of a brand new award category, Elite Gold. Wines awarded this accolade represent outstanding quality, scoring between 19 and the maximum 20 points. Elite Gold, gives special recognition to those truly great wines amongst the gold medal winners in each class. Of the 1,540 wines entered into this year’s competition, only 29 wines were awarded an Elite Gold.
Tohu’s Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2007 has been awarded Air New Zealand’s inaugural Elite Gold. The Sauvignon Blanc category is notoriously competitive attracting over 270 entries. This year was no exception as Marlborough has just come off one of its greatest vintages with many winemakers describing 2007 as a sensational year for Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. If the results are anything to go by, this most certainly is the case. All gold medals awarded for Sauvignon Blanc at this year’s competition were from Marlborough. Seven of the 29 Elite Gold Medals awarded this year went to Sauvignon Blanc entries.
The Tohu 2007 Sauvignon Blanc is described by the Air New Zealand judges as “Toasted apple and musk with passionfruit, pineapple and sweet stone fruit flourish.” At a RRP of $19.00 this wine represents outstanding quality and exceptional value. Available at all leading bottle and retails shops throughout New Zealand.
